   This is a mainly American term for a cock, one that has sometimes been applied to a man who is cocky, or vain.
   The occasional instances of vocative use that come to light, however, appear to be reasonably flattering. In George Meredith’s Henry Richmond an older man calls a younger ‘you young rooster’, while Sinclair Lewis, in Babbitt, has his hero say to a friend: ‘Say, W.A., old rooster, it comes over me that I could stand it if we didn’t go back to the lovin’ wives, this handsome Abend’ See also Cock.
